Partners in Product Protection
Found in News
Like many businesses, 2020 gave the team at Barum & Dewar the opportunity to reflect and review who we are as a business, where we want to go and look at what we need to do to get there. Part of this was a review of our brand and market positioning, which proved to be a useful exercise for the team to work on together to ensure alignment and understanding across our business.
To begin the exercise we engaged an independent firm to complete a customer research programme. At Barum & Dewar we have always been a customer focused business so it was imperative that our starting point for any review was our customers. In-depth one to one interviews of a representative sample were completed and the feedback was presented back to the team anonymously. The exercise was hugely valuable and required us to take a step back to look at our business from a client point of view, the results of which informed the refinement of our brand and new brand proposition.
Our customers, suppliers and team know our company values play an important role in how we run and do business, therefore, it was important that they remained the keystone of our brand and anything we did was built upon them. What became very clear from the customer feedback was the different way in which Barum & Dewar work with our customers. Quotes such as “They are my go-to company” and “I can always trust them to deliver” were particularly encouraging for the team and I.
Having reviewed the feedback and following a team workshop our new brand proposition was developed- Partners in Product Protection. The statement sums up the relationship we as a business want to have with our customers and most importantly it has been validated by them too. The Barum & Dewar team is committed to continually go above and beyond for our customers and our dedicated client service ethos ensure we approach any customer challenge with progressive thinking to deliver product confidence.
Taking the time to invest in our own business has been an excellent and worthwhile experience for the team and I. Our new brand and positioning is only a part of our future, but it’s one that I look forward to as the business and our team continues to grow and progress.

Designed by the experts
Found in News
At Barum & Dewar, our team includes expert and industry leading designers, supply chain managers and project managers with experience in successfully developing packaging solutions that consistently exceed customer expectations. Central to the success of our solutions is the design phase and our in-house design experts have developed our process based on years of experience.
When clients engage with Barum & Dewar they can trust that they are working with market leading experts. We work closely with a range of clients, in diverse sectors, across the world to develop our depth of knowledge and continually work with clients to look for ways in which to improve our process.
Our process begins by working closely with our clients to really understand the detail of their requirements. Taking the time to discuss the project provides the opportunity for our designers to add value, challenge thinking and come up with a bespoke solution that best meets the requirement. Often our clients do not have a clear brief and so we work very closely with them to ensure there is a full understanding of the intricacies and specific needs for the project before progressing further.
“Their ability to communicate our ideas into designs is very impressive.” B&D Client Feedback 2020
Once the brief has been finalised and approved, our designers use Creo, our 3D modelling software to create a virtual prototype and realistically visualise how the final solution will appear bringing complete project confidence for our clients.
In our most recent client feedback exercise we received excellent comments regarding our in-house capabilities. Both our people and design approach were identified as differentiating us in the market and this is something we as a company are extremely proud of.
Importantly we must continue to work closely with our customers to ensure we always have the best design expertise in the market, bringing value to them and all projects we work on.

Aerospace and Defence Industry Outlook 2021
Found in News
As we look ahead to DSEI 2021 next week at London’s ExCeL, it is important to reflect on the changes we have seen in our sector over the last 18 months and consider the key changes facing our sector in the year ahead.
Below we look at the expected trends for the sector as outlined in the recently published 2021 Aerospace and Defence industry outlook by Deloitte.
The global aerospace and defence (A&D) industry revenue is expected to begin to recover in 2021 after a difficult year in 2020. But this recovery will likely be uneven across the two key sectors, commercial aerospace and defence. The commercial aerospace sector has been significantly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, which has led to a dramatic reduction in passenger traffic, in turn affecting aircraft demand. As a result, the commercial aerospace sector is expected to recover slowly, as travel demand is not expected to return to pre–COVID-19 levels before 2024. The defence sector is expected to remain stable in 2021, as most countries have not significantly reduced defence budgets and remain committed to sustaining their military capabilities. However, given the disruption in the complex global supply chain, some defence programs could face minor cost increases and schedule delays in 2021.
Four key trends worth highlighting include:
1. Sector to remain stable as countries plan to sustain their military capabilities
In 2021, defence budgets and revenues for defence contractors are expected to remain largely stable, as military programs continue to be critical to national defence, especially considering geopolitical tensions. Global defence spending is expected to grow about 2.8% in 2021, crossing the $2 trillion mark. Countries across the globe continue to spend on strengthening their militaries as geopolitical tensions intensify despite the global pandemic.
2. Satellite broadband, space exploration, and militarisation to drive growth
Despite the ongoing pandemic, space launches for the first half of 2020 were mostly at par with previous years; the 41 successful launches were only slightly below the five-year average of successful launches (43). As funding continues to increase and costs decline, the space industry is likely to experience increased opportunities, primarily in satellite broadband internet access. In 2020, space investments remained strong at $25.6 billion, and the momentum for investments is likely to remain solid in 2021 as well. Space launch services are expected to record strong growth in 2021, with the market forecast to grow more than 15.7% year over year. Space exploration is also expected to continue to evolve and grow in 2021 due to declining launch costs and advances in technology.
3. Industry to focus on transforming supply chains into more resilient and dynamic networks
Lower aircraft demand and restrictions on the movement of people and goods due to the pandemic led to a breakdown of many essential A&D supply chains. This has resulted in an impact on smaller suppliers, especially those with heavy exposure to commercial aerospace and the aftermarket business. As most A&D suppliers are highly specialised with unique expertise and complex equipment, they could continue to struggle to make quick changes to production in response to varying demand.
In 2021, the industry’s focus is likely to shift toward transforming supply chains into more resilient and dynamic networks, which could be done using strategies such as onshoring, vertical integration, and increased cyber defences.
4. Industry expected to focus on restructuring, cost reduction, and supply chain transformation in 2021
While the A&D industry, particularly commercial aerospace, is expected to face near-term challenges, the defence sector is expected to remain stable and weather the pandemic’s disruption. In 2021, commercial aerospace manufacturers are likely to focus on restructuring and cost reduction to position themselves for profitable growth in the long term. The industry is also likely to take advantage of the pandemic and drop in demand to transform supply chains. Also, A&D companies could pursue M&A opportunities to build scale and capture greater value. Long-term growth prospects for the A&D industry remain strong. The space sector and technological developments, such as advanced air mobility, hypersonics, electric propulsion, and hydrogen-powered aircraft, are likely to drive future growth for the industry.
Next week’s event at London’s ExCeL will focus on these key areas with full days dedicated to Industry and Supply Chain Engagement, Future Operational Requirements, Obtaining Skills for the Industry and Information Exploitation.
The team at Barum & Dewar are looking forward to the event and reconnecting with the industry and our valued contacts after what has been a challenging year for the sector.

DSEI 2021 initial reflections: The strength of industry collaboration and good relationships
Found in News
"It is crucial to have good relationships and a strong shared understanding of requirements between military and industry to ensure seamless operations”
The defence industry today was re-united in full force for the first time in 18 months at DSEI - and nothing beats meeting face-to-face, making connections, and sharing industry best practice for the development of our sector. The event and show have provided the opportunity to reignite industry relationships that have been online for the last 18 months.
Day 1 has been dedicated to military-industry engagement and acquisition strategy, providing an in-depth analysis of key capabilities and technology programmes from service leaders, as well as looking at where business development opportunities are for solution providers to join the supply chain.
Specialising in the aerospace and defence industry for over 20 years, the Barum & Dewar team have unrivalled experience of the industry dynamics and challenges to deliver every time for our clients. The theme of the conference this year is ‘Powering progress: Defining your future’ and aligns with our ethos and way of working to build strong, valued relationships with our clients and supply chain.
It is crucial to have good relationships and a strong shared understanding of requirements between military and industry to ensure seamless operations. Interactions between clients, consultants, contractors and solution providers, and how effective they are, have a substantial impact on the success of any project. Fraught relationships can lead to underperformance and waste. A lack of strong communication can result in the loss of innovation as ideas travel down the pipeline. Over time, this can whittle away trust across the supply chain and internally, preventing companies from taking on board new learning, best practice, or innovation. Not only can a failure to work effectively as one team (with one common goal) put the efficient delivery of projects at risk, but it can also mean that innovation and best practice take longer to become embedded across the sector.
Building trusted relationships across our supply chains and industry partners ensures that we can consistently give the greatest value to our client relationships. At Barum & Dewar we have built a strong supply chain, working with experts and businesses who also share this philosophy of delivering quality and customer service in everything they do.
Our focus on nurturing trusted partnerships allows B&D to explore the benefits and solutions which only working together will solve for the industry as we move forward - finding ways to power progress and define our industry’s future, together.

Our partners in product protection
Found in News
Our supply chain is critical in all that we do and is the foundation upon which we continue to deliver such an excellent service to our customers. Like most UK manufacturing businesses with a global supply chain, we have been experiencing many supply challenges with longer lead times and delivery carriers stretched. We’re well positioned to take on these challenges but realise now more than ever we must maintain the respect and communication that facilitates the good working relationships we’ve had with our supply partners for so many years. Most of our suppliers have been working with us since the beginning of our business and are an integrated part of our business.
Given the nature of our business, our supply chain must run smoothly to ensure materials are in place to meet our strict production schedules. With suppliers across the globe, we facilitate the movement of materials internationally via land, sea and air to ensure goods are in place on time. We have very little room for error, and we always work to high standards to ensure the quality of our end products is exceptional. This means we work very closely with our suppliers and there is a mutual level of trust and respect so that we prevent delays and if any issues do arise, we can deal with these collaboratively and keep our customers well informed.
With the challenges currently faced across the industry, we have been fortunate to have a chain of trusted suppliers who have worked with us to find solutions where necessary, whether this has been changing a design or exploring alternative materials. This means we’ve been able to minimise disruption to our operations and ensure delivery schedules continue to be met. Our supply partners are an essential part of our business and continue to be key to our customer success.

Barum & Dewar foam facility retains ISO 9001
Found in News
Barum & Dewar is delighted to congratulate our foam facility for once again retaining its BSI certification for its quality management system (ISO 9001:2015) following the annual Quality Assessment undertaken by leading global independently accredited certification body, NQA.
ISO 9001 is an International Quality Management System Standard that specifies requirements within which an organisation demonstrates its ability to consistently provide products or services to meet customer and legal requirements, enhancing customer satisfaction and opening the way to continual improvement.
The ISO accreditation brings many benefits for us as a manufacturer. As we strive to meet the requirements of the quality management system, we are identifying areas of continual improvement which enables us to stay ahead in our competitive industry. It also brings benefits for our customers who can trust that our products and processes meet the stringent quality requirements of the assessment.
David Frame, Managing Director of Barum & Dewar, said,

Barum & Dewar renews JOSCAR accreditation for 2022
Found in News
Barum & Dewar is delighted to announce our renewal on the JOSCAR supplier accreditation register for 2022, having first obtained the qualification in 2019. The Joint Supply Chain Accreditation Register (JOSCAR) enables companies in the Aerospace, Defence, Security & Space sectors to identify qualified suppliers. The accreditation is supported by some of the largest purchasers in the defence community such as Leonardo, BAE Systems and the Ministry of Defence, and indicates that Barum & Dewar has fulfilled the appropriate credentials.
JOSCAR is a cross-sector collaboration solution which reduces the time, cost and resources needed to provide information to major customers. As a risk management tool, it objectively assesses potential vendor risks and areas of compliance before suppliers can obtain accreditation. Common supplier data is then held in a central system allowing information to be accessed by all participating buying organisations.
The open system of information that JOSCAR provides also benefits us as a supplier as it allows us to demonstrate our level of customer compliance, quickly qualify any 3rd party suppliers we may use and identify areas where we can be continuously improving our business which in turn allows us to provide the excellent level of service to our customers that Barum & Dewar has become synonymous with.
The team at Barum & Dewar works hard to maintain the standards of JOSCAR and we are pleased that we have once again satisfied the requirements to become fully compliant on the register. Becoming a member assures our customers and partners that the service we provide is of the highest quality and complies with the industry standards.

Partner Spotlight: Zarges
Found in News
With over 80 years’ experience in aluminium construction operating from three production plants in Europe, Zarges has been a key strategic supply partner to Barum & Dewar for almost 25 years.
With shared corporate values, close attention to detail and an unwillingness to compromise on quality Zarges have long been a trusted and reliable supply partner to B&D. With a deep industry knowledge and high levels of technical expertise B&D are regularly sought to advise on and design suitable product protection solutions. The wide range of high quality aluminium cases and containers from Zarges are an excellent foundation for B&D to develop bespoke protective packaging solutions for clients whose requirements demand even greater sophistication and features.
The two businesses communicate openly with one another, with the technical teams regularly in contact to share and obtain data that ensures any enhancements and added features work seamlessly with their designs. Having worked together for so long there is a huge degree of trust between both teams with ideas and suggestions shared openly for the benefit of our clients. B&D’s direct access to the technical support offered by Zarges underpins both the relationship that exists as well as ensuring B&D are up to date with the very latest product and technical developments.
Neil Harper, Sales Manager at Zarges said of the relationship:
“You can really see the deep industry knowledge that Barum & Dewar has. Their team has a huge level of technical expertise and their determination to find the right solution for the customer is admirable.”
He continued,
“Zarges prides itself on the quality of our products and in many sectors, we are regarded as the industry standard. It is vital that we trust our partners and we have complete confidence that Barum & Dewar will always align themselves to our exceptional delivery and customer service standards with an outstanding result for our clients. Recently, hazardous goods transportation has become a big challenge in the UK and Europe with ADR regulations limiting the way in which the end users can transport goods, for example lithium-ion batteries now require very specialist transport. This is a growth market for Zarges, who works closely with industry bodies to ensure its products meet the guidelines. This is an example of the type of industry knowledge that is shared openly between Zarges and Barum & Dewar, which enables us to stay on top of the ever-evolving regulations and better serve our clients.”
David Frame, Managing Director at Barum & Dewar commented:
“Our partnership with Zarges has seen the delivery of some amazing projects and provided Barum & Dewar with the opportunity to demonstrate not only its own capabilities but to showcase the benefits of true co-operation and collaboration. Whether it is the delivery of high performance Mitraset 19” racks to a key defence project, the addition of shock mounted plates within a K475 container for a space client or foam filled K470 lightweight containers to an industrial customer the results never fail to impress”

Large scale packaging design
Found in News
Dave Rouse, our Technical Design Engineer, discusses all things large scale packaging design, from initial client briefs to technical challenges and the finished product.
Barum & Dewar has a long history of supplying large, bespoke containers to key clients in the space and defence sector and work alongside businesses such as Airbus, SSTL and the Ministry of Defence. In the space sector, our large bespoke containers are used to transport equipment such as satellite hardware including small satellites, parts for larger satellites and a number of related items. In the defence sector, we’ve developed bespoke packaging for a wide array of equipment with some of the largest containers being for submarine periscopes.
We work closely with our clients on these types of projects to ensure we design a product that is completely fit for purpose and will match their needs. At the initial stage we run through how they intend to use the product through its whole lifecycle so we can establish what features they need, for example if it needs waterproofing or must be airtight or whether it will need lifting points or forklift points. We’re not afraid to question and challenge our clients to make sure we design something that works completely for them, and we’ll never take the easiest option.
When designing products to such a large scale there are many factors to be taken into consideration. One of the biggest challenges we face is designing something that’s as compact and lightweight as possible whilst still being completely robust so it’s important for us to get this right. Our Creo 3D CAD modelling system helps us visualise the entire product at the design stage so we can test different scenarios and ultimately find the right balance.
There are also several technical challenges throughout the design process, one of these being selecting the appropriate shock mounts so that when the equipment is subject to vibrations and movement during transit it isn’t at any risk of being damaged. To mitigate this, we work closely with shock and vibration control specialists, Socitec who run advanced calculations with our client’s data, for example the item’s maximum G loading, to determine the correct shock mounts.
Something we are seeing more often with our large bespoke containers, especially concerning space hardware, are more stringent health and safety procedures coming into play which is leading to higher test ratings. For example, on large containers the testing ratings we used to see were around 1.2x the gross mass but now some clients are requesting 2.5x so we’ve had to change the way we design. We’re very adaptable to our client requirements so we’ve been able to accommodate this well.
We see our clients coming back to us time and time again for large, bespoke packaging and that is down to the interaction and collaboration we have with them throughout the entirety of the project. Our clients feel assured we will deliver a product that works for them because we are focused on asking the right questions and are obsessive about detail. This translates directly into the quality of our products as we are so committed to getting the design right from the very beginning.

Further deliveries have begun under UK Ministry of Defence NSoIT(D) contract
Found in News
Barely three months into the new year and deliveries of additional ruggedised transit cases and 19” rack housings to the UK Ministry of Defence have already begun at Barum & Dewar. Deliveries are scheduled to continue over the next couple of months as hundreds of cases are fitted out with bespoke Computerised Numerical Control (CNC) routed internal foam, fabricated aluminium bracketry, webbing straps and full label sets.
Due to the current challenges faced within the global supply chain and the logistical uncertainties surrounding international freight, Barum & Dewar’s operations team chose to have the military-accredited empty cases and racks shipped directly from our partner SKB’s US manufacturing facility in several 40ft containers straight to our dedicated foam facility in Southampton. Once received, the empty cases are being united with previously manufactured foam inserts, assembled, packed and shipped straight to Ministry of Defence stores.
The cases and racks are all part of the NSoIT(D) five-year contract awarded to Barum & Dewar in 2020 and will provide protection to a range of IT hardware and associated communication equipment during field deployment, enabling rapid delivery to the frontline.
David Frame, Managing Director at Barum & Dewar, said,
“Having worked closely with Ministry of Defence teams for the past two years, we have a clear understanding of the intricacies of the project and the specific needs of the client, which has allowed us to continue to deliver market-leading protective packaging solutions that are bespoke to their needs.”

Barum & Dewar secures additional Falcon Shield deployable protective cases order from Leonardo
Found in News
Barum & Dewar has secured a follow-on order from leading aerospace company, Leonardo. This latest contract will see Barum & Dewar provide a range of additional Falcon Shield deployable protective cases and builds on the success of previous deliveries.
Leonardo is among the top ten world players in Aerospace, Defence and Security with significant industrial presence in the UK. Barum & Dewar has been a trusted supplier of rugged, deployable cases, racks and protective packaging for more than ten years.
In 2019, Barum & Dewar worked in close partnership with Leonardo to design and manufacture a bespoke protective packaging solution to ensure the safe transportation and storage of Falcon Shield.
Falcon Shield is a rapidly deployable, scalable and modular system designed to address the threat from low, slow and small unmanned air systems (UAS). Falcon Shield’s flexible configurable system enables highly accurate detection, tracking, identification, geo-location and mitigation of UAS threats through a complimentary, fully integrated suite of sensors and effectors.
Falcon Shield’s software Command, Control and Situational Awareness (C2SA) environment provides a modular integration framework and intuitive user interface enabling comprehensive monitoring of the UAS threat environment and delivery of effective threat mitigation.
As a deployable modular system, all components are required to be fully protected and easily handled during transportation. The previously designed and field-proven solutions from Barum & Dewar have once again been selected by Leonardo to support its latest contract awards.
Alan Gemmell, Procurement Manager at Leonardo, said,
“Having worked closely with Barum & Dewar to produce the Falcon Shield cases back in 2019 and seeing first-hand how professional and knowledgeable the team are, the exceptional quality of the cases and the timely manner in which they were delivered, there was no doubt that we’d work together again.”

Pioneering protective packaging for oceanographic equipment with NOC
Found in News
Barum & Dewar is pleased to announce a new contract win with the National Oceanography Centre (NOC).
One of the world’s top oceanographic institutions, the NOC undertakes world leading research in large scale oceanography and ocean measurement technology innovation; working with government and business to turn great science and technology into advice and applications. It supports scientists in universities and research institutes with facilities, research infrastructure and irreplaceable data assets – enabling the UK to harness the full power and diversity of its ocean science talent.
Following successful delivery of bespoke cases for large pieces of oceanographic equipment in the past, the NOC approached Barum & Dewar to provide protective packaging for the transport of its submarine gliders and accessories to several coastal deployments around the UK.
The submarine gliders are highly sophisticated, and extremely valuable scientific hardware that gather oceanographic data for a wide variety of applications. This kit travels in a ‘ready to deploy’ state, so their safe and secure storage and transit is of paramount importance.
The NOC’s existing cases limit the number of gliders it can transport at any one time. This, coupled with the fact that the cases can be stored on deck or quayside, in harsh saltwater environments at temperatures ranging anywhere from -10 to +30 degrees Celsius, forms the basis of the brief to Barum & Dewar.
With over 15 years of experience working in the subsea sector, Barum & Dewar is perfectly placed to design new protective cases for the submarine gliders, working to propose a solution that is lightweight, durable and space efficient.
