B&D Spotlight: Defence Sector
For almost 25 years Barum & Dewar has developed a reputation within the Defence sector for both our proven ability to design innovative, cost effective and performance focussed product protection solutions and for our project management capabilities.
Defence packaging is by its nature unlike any other sector with the need to deploy equipment rapidly into unforgiving environments in the knowledge that it will function as expected when called upon.
In recent years Barum & Dewar has developed its project management capabilities and now operates a partnership approach on all key projects ensuring a high level of client engagement throughout. Defence projects are often complex, multi-disciplined with changing deadlines and priorities which require flexibility and high levels of engagement. This partnership approach suits the nature of this sector perfectly ensuring projects remain on time, on budget and achieve the goals originally set.
Recent high profile defence contract wins have established Barum & Dewar as a knowledgeable and trusted partner for product protection within the UK defence sector. Looking ahead, emerging projects in the deployable arena in particular should provide us with the opportunity to demonstrate our significant experience and innovative design capability as a valued partner to both the MoD and defence primes alike.
“The Defence sector and the packaging challenges it presents fits perfectly with the skills, experience and range of ruggedised case solutions developed and offered by Barum & Dewar. For nearly 25 years Barum & Dewar have designed, developed, produced and supported the UK Ministry of Defence and wider defence sector with industry leading specialist packaging products.
The increasing need for IT, Tactical Comms and unmanned air systems (UAS) to be fully deployed with speed and at short notice places increasing importance on case and container selection. B&D’s recent contract award for all containerisation on the New Style of IT Deployed (NSoIT(D)) project confirms its reputation as a trusted and experienced partner to the UK Defence sector.”

Designed by the experts
At Barum & Dewar, our team includes expert and industry leading designers, supply chain managers and project managers with experience in successfully developing packaging solutions that consistently exceed customer expectations. Central to the success of our solutions is the design phase and our in-house design experts have developed our process based on years of experience.
When clients engage with Barum & Dewar they can trust that they are working with market leading experts. We work closely with a range of clients, in diverse sectors, across the world to develop our depth of knowledge and continually work with clients to look for ways in which to improve our process.
Our process begins by working closely with our clients to really understand the detail of their requirements. Taking the time to discuss the project provides the opportunity for our designers to add value, challenge thinking and come up with a bespoke solution that best meets the requirement. Often our clients do not have a clear brief and so we work very closely with them to ensure there is a full understanding of the intricacies and specific needs for the project before progressing further.
“Their ability to communicate our ideas into designs is very impressive.” B&D Client Feedback 2020
Once the brief has been finalised and approved, our designers use Creo, our 3D modelling software to create a virtual prototype and realistically visualise how the final solution will appear bringing complete project confidence for our clients.
In our most recent client feedback exercise we received excellent comments regarding our in-house capabilities. Both our people and design approach were identified as differentiating us in the market and this is something we as a company are extremely proud of.
Importantly we must continue to work closely with our customers to ensure we always have the best design expertise in the market, bringing value to them and all projects we work on.

Partners in Product Protection
Like many businesses, 2020 gave the team at Barum & Dewar the opportunity to reflect and review who we are as a business, where we want to go and look at what we need to do to get there. Part of this was a review of our brand and market positioning, which proved to be a useful exercise for the team to work on together to ensure alignment and understanding across our business.
To begin the exercise we engaged an independent firm to complete a customer research programme. At Barum & Dewar we have always been a customer focused business so it was imperative that our starting point for any review was our customers. In-depth one to one interviews of a representative sample were completed and the feedback was presented back to the team anonymously. The exercise was hugely valuable and required us to take a step back to look at our business from a client point of view, the results of which informed the refinement of our brand and new brand proposition.
Our customers, suppliers and team know our company values play an important role in how we run and do business, therefore, it was important that they remained the keystone of our brand and anything we did was built upon them. What became very clear from the customer feedback was the different way in which Barum & Dewar work with our customers. Quotes such as “They are my go-to company” and “I can always trust them to deliver” were particularly encouraging for the team and I.
Having reviewed the feedback and following a team workshop our new brand proposition was developed- Partners in Product Protection. The statement sums up the relationship we as a business want to have with our customers and most importantly it has been validated by them too. The Barum & Dewar team is committed to continually go above and beyond for our customers and our dedicated client service ethos ensure we approach any customer challenge with progressive thinking to deliver product confidence.
Taking the time to invest in our own business has been an excellent and worthwhile experience for the team and I. Our new brand and positioning is only a part of our future, but it’s one that I look forward to as the business and our team continues to grow and progress.

Barum & Dewar celebrate JOSCAR renewal
The team at Barum & Dewar is delighted to announce the successful renewal of their JOSCAR stage 2 qualification.
The Joint Supply Chain Accreditation Register (JOSCAR) is an accreditation system that is highly valued by large purchasers in the Defence, Space, Security and Aerospace sectors which shows that suppliers are fit for business and identifies organisations who have shown commitment to achieving the credentials and live the values that the accreditation system stand for. The Barum & Dewar team have worked to achieve these credentials and we are thrilled to announce to our clients and partners that we have once again, been successful. It is imperative to our business that we are accredited by this governing body as some of our long-term customers are key players within this sector.
Using JOSCAR accredited suppliers reduces the risk in any project which is essential when working within these industries. It is important to assess risks within your supply chain relating to vendors of products and services as well in other areas of compliance including insurance and third-party certification, product safety and quality, however by using JOSCAR accredited suppliers, purchasers can be confident and efficient when moving forward on their projects.
The open system of information that JOSCAR provides also benefits us as a supplier as it allows us to demonstrate our level of customer compliance, quickly qualify any 3rd party suppliers we may use and identify areas where we can continuously improve our business which in turn allows us to provide the excellent level of service to our customers that Barum & Dewar have become synonymous with.
As a member, this assures our clients and partners that the service we provide is of the highest quality and comply with the industry standards. This, along with our long history of supplying high quality protective packaging to the defence, aerospace and security sectors and a stellar reputation shows why a B&D solution should be a priority for your next project.

Barum & Dewar expand further into Belgium with new aerospace contract
Barum & Dewar is thrilled to announce that they have been awarded a single delivery contract from Belgian company, Aerospacelab.
Aerospacelab is one of the leading European businesses specialising in Geospatial intelligence and small satellite platforms. Their new project, The PROBA-V Cubesat, a small, low-cost satellite is part of a 12-unit mission that will provide vegetation monitoring of the entire world’s plant growth.
With a launch date scheduled for late 2021, Aerospacelab were looking for a partner to design and supply a suitable transit and storage container to accommodate the PROBA-V companion CubeSat during trials and final delivery to the launch site. Due to the nature of the equipment, the brief from the client had various other conditions that had to be met in order for the solution to be suitable. The other requirements were that the container must protect the delicate equipment from shock, vibration, environmental issues and be suitable for use within ISO 5 cleanroom conditions. In addition, the container is required to allow nitrogen purging.
Having previously provided a solution for a similar challenge to another client, Qinetiq, the Barum & Dewar team was chosen to deliver the contract. By drawing upon the success of a previous field proven solution, B&D was able to offer the client a fast response and a reduced risk solution.
What makes Barum & Dewar's methodology so unique when delivering projects is the partnership philosophy with clients and suppliers that ensures a full engagement with all parties throughout and this project is certainly no different. The design will utilise an aluminium container from partner supplier, Zarges’s K475 range which provided certified environmental approvals. This also provides a perfect base into which all other features could be incorporated. Shock and vibration requirements were dealt with through the selection of high-performance wire rope isolation mounts from partners, Socitec, which were integrated into design of the container and fitted to a bespoke interface plate. Clamping system, auto PRV, humidity indicator, purge valves, full paint and labelling were all added.
Managing Director of B&D, David Frame, commented, “This is a new client for B&D and our first order from them. As part of our overarching business strategy, we had set a goal to widen our client base in Central Europe, with Belgium being a key target location so we are delighted to have this contract signed off with our new customer. The space sector is a market we actively target at B&D as we look to diversify our portfolio across Europe, having previously delivered successful projects to space clients in Belgium and other parts of the world. We have one other existing Belgian client, so we are delighted to now include Aerospacelab as another key client in the country and the team are looking forward to successful project delivery and making further connections.”
With the new digital way of working, Barum & Dewar has found that working with clients in other parts of the world have been no different than working with the UK based clients. Drawings were shared online with the client for approval and meetings were able to progress through digital communication channels, resulting in a quick turnaround and having all aspects of the design and development fully controlled in-house by B&D’s technical design team ensured the speed of response on a short lead-time was met. The client confidence provided by B&D through the proposed fully detailed, costed and scheduled solution which enabled the client to commit quickly to the contract which has been a great step forward for Barum & Dewar in their European business development plans.
