Partners in product protection: Barum & Dewar and Turion Space

Barum & Dewar (B&D) was thrilled to be awarded a second contract by Turion Space, a pioneering leader in space technology, for the design and manufacture of a bespoke container solution for the DROID.002 mission. This mission is set to launch in March 2025 into a circular sun-synchronous, low-Earth orbit (LEO). The second container was successfully delivered in recent weeks, marking the continuation of a strong and trusted relationship between the two companies.

Turion Space, founded with the vision of advancing the space sector by building the technology required for the future, is focused on creating spacecraft capable of moving assets in space and gathering Space Domain Awareness (SDA) data. Their DROID.002 mission plays a crucial role in their broader strategy to provide continuous debris monitoring and alert services, also known as ‘resiliency’ services, which are essential for the sustainability of operations in LEO.

The first container, a small DELTA® style container, was delivered by B&D in 2022, supporting Turion Space's earlier phases of development. Based on the success of this initial project, B&D was delighted to be awarded the follow-on contract for the second container, tailored to accommodate different payloads and interface plates for the upcoming DROID.002 mission. Both containers were fully fabricated to meet Turion’s stringent requirements, offering a secure, clean, and protective solution for spacecraft transit.

DROID.002 will serve as the first asset in a constellation designed to provide vital monitoring services in space, ensuring the safety of operational spacecraft and the broader space environment. The containers developed by B&D play a critical role in the safe transportation and handling of these mission-critical spacecraft, protecting them from shock, vibration, and external environmental factors during both domestic and international transit.

David Frame, Managing Director, Barum & Dewar, commented, “We are proud to have played an important role in Turion Space’s mission and are pleased to have earned their continued trust with this second contract. The success of our first project with Turion Space laid a strong foundation for ongoing collaboration, and our team has worked tirelessly to ensure the highest standards of design and manufacturing for this mission.”

The DROID.002 mission is a pivotal step in Turion Space’s long-term vision of advancing space infrastructure and sustainability. By enabling advancements in space debris monitoring and improving the resiliency of LEO operations, this mission will provide value to the global space industry.

Deepak Grover, COO at Turion Space, commented, “It has been a pleasure working with Barum & Dewar and the team. Their containers are made with precision and quality. We look forward to future collaborations and shared successes!”

Yessie Lynch, Director of Strategy and Programs at Turion Space, said, “Partnering with the Barum & Dewar team has been a seamless experience for Turion! We have the utmost confidence that the containers they design for our missions will be nothing short of spectacular.”

With the rapid expansion of space activities, Barum & Dewar is proud to contribute to projects like DROID.002 that are focused on ensuring a safe and sustainable future for space operations, supporting Turion Space’s mission.
